Are you interested in whitening your smile? If so, you might be considering over-the-counter or professional whitening treatments to do the job. Before you select the treatment that is right for you, our dentist, Dr. Paul Roe, would like to share the side effects of each treatment with you so you know what you’re dealing with.

When it comes to using toothbrushes, toothpaste, mouthwash, and floss that clean and whiten your teeth, there are very little side effects. However, they are likely to only whiten your smile one or two shades.

When it comes to whitening strips, you might experience irritated gums and tooth sensitivity if you use the wrong treatment or if you overuse a treatment.

When it comes to whitening trays, whether the treatment is used at home or in the dental office, you might experience tooth sensitivity if the trays are left on your smile for too long. Your gums might also become irritated if the whitening solution leaks out of the trays and onto the gums.
